Salmon Club members in the pool at Westminster Lodge

The Salmon Club provides opportunities for disabled people of all ages and those recovering from illness or operation to swim or learn to swim safely.

The club has sessions at Westminster Lodge pool on Saturday mornings between 10.30 and 11.45. The pool is an indoor heated pool with disabled facilities including a hoist to help gain access to the water for those who need it. During Salmon sessions we have exclusive use of the pool.

Safety of our members is of paramount importance to the club. St. Albans Leisure provide qualified lifeguards on duty and the club volunteers act as additional spotters and provide support to members both in and out of the water. Most are also trained First aiders.

Group of Salmon Club members in the poolThe club has been providing opportunities for 40 years. In fact this year will celebrated our 40th Anniversary in June with a garden party. It is a voluntary charitable organisation run by a committee of members. The committee are grateful to St. Albans Council and their agents St. Albans Leisure for the "free water time" made available for the use of disabled residents of the district, allowing us to keep our annual subscription low, currently £5.00. There are no session fees to swim each Saturday.

Salmon Club is also active socially

We run a range of social events including quiz evenings, race nights and garden parties. Also various day and weekend trips at home and abroad using a specially adapted disabled coach.

The club is also involved in helping to raise funds for other local disabled charities. Each year members take part in sponsored swims, which since 1982 has raised over £25,000. Last year we raised £2,000 for Grove House. Various social events previously have  raised money for other local disabled charities including Riding for the Disabled and MENCAP.
